“Have you been watching The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?” You asked, I answered. Equal parts trauma, tea, and testimony. 🙏🏾
Endless thanks to @brkmrn for your patience and thoughtful edits.
I say enough in the essay. Just read it. 🖤

For people who may not know me well: this creature you love and adore comes from nothing. I am the child of two drug addicts — one whose addiction led to her death, and the other who lives with paranoid schizophrenia. I grew up on food stamps, the beautiful Horizon card, and free school lunch. PBS, Between the Lions and Reading Rainbow, sparked my love for reading and writing. Libraries and after-school programs kept me safe during long summer days.
“Look at me, Look at me, I’m a Head Start kid!” A federally funded program that provides education to low-income families. Other Government-subsidized programs and grants made me the first of five kids to graduate from a four-year college — not just by helping me get there (shout out to TRiO + ETS) but by helping me stay there by paying me above minimum wage through college — all my love to Sheldon, Lindsey, and Becky. Pell Grants and FAFSA covered tuition, while Jamar at the Department of Workforce Services stepped in when my car broke down or textbooks were due. Scholarships through the Multicultural Youth Center and the Black Student Union — two organizations my university has since eliminated — gave me community and support through those hard years. (Shame on you Weber State!)
And yes, I worked my ass off to have the life I have now. Really hard. But the truth is: I only have this life because of the kindness of strangers, and government funded programs intended for poor kids like me. Because someone went out of their way to make sure I had what I needed — whether that was money, mentorship, or a shoulder to cry on.
There is absolutely, positively no way I would be living the life I have, working in the art world, holding the job I hold now, without these supports. And I am devastated to see so many of them disappear. I think about the versions of me out there who will never reach the level they deserve to — not because they aren’t brilliant or hardworking, but because the ladder has been pulled up behind us.
People like to call this a culture war. In some ways it is. But for many of us — and for the ones coming after us — this is life and death. And they’re killing us on purpose.

Publicist by day, writer by night. So proud of all the great stories my team and I secured this past year! This is hardly even a snapshot. Being a publicist is an invisible and often thankless job, but I’m so grateful to work with the best people and organizations in the art game. Cheers to another year of wins! ✨

Freddy’s bladed glove. Hannibal Lecter’s mask. The things that haunt us have a history of their own.
For our “Ghost in the Gallery” series, @_shaqy speaks with Nicholas Barlow and Bradford Nordeen (@foxandhisfriends) about the @academymuseum’s “The Horror Show,” the stories behind its objects, and why we love to be scared.

“Her voice is as serene and soft as her paintings. … We talked about the uncertainties, disappointments, and tragedies that are beyond what we can often prepare for—and why we continue to dream, anyway.” — Shaquille Heath

I’m not sure how this became my year of personal essays, but apparently it was written in the stars. Alas, here is my newest creation. If you want to read about three of the greatest loves of my life and how psychics predicted the demise of each relationship, this one’s for you. Somehow, I still didn’t see any of it coming. (Link in bio or whatever)
P.S. If you know where to buy a One Wish Willow, my DMs are open.
Also, enjoy this photo of my diva of a mother, which she had taken to look like angel wings. 🪽

Every great mystery leaves clues. So does every great work of art.
In a new episode of Unibrow Radio, @_shaqy speaks with curator Patrick R. Crowley about “JANE!” at Stanford’s @cantorarts, an exhibition exploring the life, legacy, and mysterious death of Jane Stanford.
A collector of oddities, advocate for the arts, and one of the central figures behind Stanford University, Jane remains as enigmatic in death as she was in life. The exhibition brings together art, grief, institutional history, and the ghost stories that still surround her.
