Some more installation views of my work @gwangjubiennale on view until 1st December
Valence, 2024, kinetic sound installation. Duration 10 mins
Composer: @stevenatkinsonsound
Pictures by @andrew.uroskie
“The installation for the Biennale consists of ten modular kinetic sculptures in a purpose built room. Each module houses an inflated silicone rubber sculpture derived from a scan of the artist’s brain. Transformed and simplified via computer software, this object becomes a more universal form. A sonic composition designed by Steven Atkinson controls an automated pneumatic system that physically interacts with the pliable silicone. This controlled and machinist manipulation of forms inspired by a human organ evokes both life and constraint.”

This work began with research into the neurochemical phenomenon in the brain during a ‘fight or flight’ response. It is described as an uncontrollable and predictable process, which bypasses the conscious mind. Using a neurosurgeon’s explanatory drawing as a template, the work plays out the hard-wired brain activity as a psychological drama, where neuroanatomy is both victimised and vilified like contemporary homunculi, set to a score of viola, violin and cello. The work invites questions about the embodied mind, brain hacking, free will, anxiety, empathy and transhumanism.

WIRED brings together Róza El-Hassan, Justin Fitzpatrick, Anna Hulacova, Botond Keresztesi, OMARA Mara Oláh, Nam June Paik, Harrison Pearce, Robotto Ottó Szabó, Ádám Takács to explore the unstable relationship between technology, perception, and reality.
From early experimental media to hyper contemporary visual languages, the exhibition unfolds as a field of entangled signals, bodies, and machines. Systems of knowledge appear not as fixed truths, but as fragile frameworks open to distortion and collapse.
Harrison Pearce’s practice moves precisely within this space. Emerging from a personal encounter with misdiagnosis, his work questions the authority of empirical knowledge and the supposed objectivity of scientific systems.

Harrison Pearce is a UK based artist whose work investigates the limits of rational knowledge and the instability of systems that claim objectivity. With a background in analytic philosophy, he draws on medical imaging, chaos theory, and linguistics to explore how meaning is constructed and where it begins to break down.
A pivotal moment in his practice came from a misdiagnosed brain anomaly, which disrupted his trust in logic driven structures and led him to question the reliability of scientific frameworks. Painting becomes for him a way to hold uncertainty rather than resolve it.
His works often recall diagnostic imagery and abstracted anatomies, hovering between representation and abstraction, where clarity dissolves into ambiguity.
He has exhibited internationally, including at Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Perrotin in Paris, Royal Society of Sculptors in London, Mou Projects in Hong Kong, Carl Kostyál in London, New Galerie in Paris, Ribot Gallery in Milan, Baert Gallery in Los Angeles, Division of Labour in Manchester, Schlossmuseum Linz, and Mine Project in Shanghai, and was included in the Gwangju Biennale 2024 curated by Nicolas Bourriaud.

Tacet, 2026
Oil and acrylic on canvas, 110 x 90cm
Tacet is a musical term meaning “it is silent.” A notation used when a performer does not play for a passage, remaining present but inactive.
I like using words like this - terms that already carry a precise function, but open out into other readings when you move them into a different context. They come with structure, but also a kind of looseness. You recognise them, but you’re not entirely sure how to hold them.
Across the works, these titles act a bit like instructions, but ones that don’t fully resolve. They sit somewhere between definition and indeterminacy. They point you toward rhythm, pause, repetition, touch, but without locking the forms into a single interpretation.
That tension is important to me. The show sits in abeyance - held, suspended, not quite fixed. The language does the same thing as the forms: it stabilises just enough to orient you, then slips.

“The state of expectation is no longer a neutral condition, but a pause charged with emotional intensity. It is a dense, almost corporeal suspension that places Pearce’s works in a new and more explicitly “human” dimension. Body, mind and machine thus become objects to be observed simultaneously, not in opposition but in mutual relation: one is functional to the other. All converge on the pictorial surface, conceived as a privileged space for shaping the
unrepresentable - that entanglement of the organic and the mechanical that are not reciprocally exclusive but rather support and define each other.” @mariavilla8585

“Immanence”, acrylic and oil on canvas, 2026. 110 x 90cm
Making this series pulled me back to a quote I would often think of from a posthumously published manuscript by Rothko:
“Tactile space, or, for the sake of simplicity, let us call it air, which exists between objects or shapes in the picture, is painted so that it gives the sensation of a solid. That is, air in a tactile painting is represented as an actual substance rather than as an emptiness. We might more readily conceive it if we picture a plate of jelly or, perhaps, soft putty, into which a series of objects are impressed at various depths.”

‘Cleft’, 2026
acrylic and oil on canvas, 110 x 90cm
@ribotgallery
“While Pearce’s broader practice encompasses painting alongside multimedia works with sculptural and installation-based dimensions, here he deliberately confines his inquiry to a two-dimensional and wholly illusory field. Within this space, the dissolution of physicality places all constituent elements—biomorphic, architectural, and technological—on an equivalent plane, each contributing to the constructed artifice of the image. Through this strategy, the artist subtly activates and externalizes the viewer’s emotional register.” @mariavilla8585

‘Reprise’, 2026, oil and acrylic on canvas, 170 x 130cm
On display at my solo show ‘In Abeyance’ @ribotgallery in Milan
From the exhibition text by Maria Villa: ‘Body, mind, architecture, and machine thus assume equal ontological status within the pictorial field: they exist as representations and, precisely in this condition, acquire equivalent weight. Their relationships are not hierarchical but relational - at times even imbued with sensual or erotic undertones. The forms, whether embedded or forcibly compressed within invented structures, derive meaning from their complex and indeterminate interaction with their surrounding context. It is within this suspended dialogue between subject and environment - fixed in a precise instant - that the image system becomes operative and legible on a perceptual level.
