I found these while going through my archive for a new trio. They’re my images from Modern Ikebana: A New Wave in Floral Design, and somehow they’ve never made it onto this page. I spent months in Japan and a part of me never really left. Having my name in a book about ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement) still feels like a small way of going back. . It looks at the presence of women (or more precisely, their absence) in certain spaces within one of Andalucía’s most defining traditions: Semana Santa. As manolas in black lace, as nazarenas in slow procession, as daughters, sisters, believers, women are there. Their roles are highly ritualised, heavy with symbols of sorrow and devotion. But behind the veils and candles, where are their voices? Why are some roles still closed to them? Leadership in the hermandades remains out of reach. Tradition holds firm, and yet, step by step, presence persists.
