It was 1995 when Athena Calderone decided to try on a different version of herself. Ready to leave Long Island behind, @eyeswoon moved to New York, shaved her head, pierced her septum, and found herself in nightlife, surrounded by a creative world she had never known. “I came alive,” she remembers. The people she met along the way, including longtime friends like @alikavoussi, opened her world even further, and as Victor’s career took off, that world grew to include @madonna , who once asked him why Athena was always so quiet. Surrounded by larger-than-life characters, she was still learning how to find her own voice. “I kept trying many different versions of Athena,” she says. One pursuit would open the door to another, with her curiosity carrying her through each new chapter until the seemingly separate parts of her life began to come together. What she was building along the way, perhaps without realizing it at the time, was a creative language that naturally was her own. Years later, that curiosity hasn’t gone anywhere. “I’ve taught myself about every period in design, and I understand myself,” she says. “I think some of the success is coming because I’ve done the work.” For V162, Athena looks back with her husband, legendary DJ @vcalderone, at the life that unfolded from those early New York days.
